Van Gogh lived in and loved London. London’s parks were a particular highlight for him. Coming from Holland, it’s not difficult to imagine that he visited Holland Park and Notting Hill. There the amazing spring blossoms would have inspired him. To celebrate Van Gogh and his blossom paintings we have created an exclusive Melt Van Gogh Easter Egg.
“And did those feet in Victorian times,
Walk upon Notting’s hills green?
And was the holy lamb of god
In Holland’s pleasant parks seen”
Notting Hill – The World’s Greatest Urban Environment
At Melt, we believe Notting Hill is one of the greatest urban environments in the world. Spring in Notting Hill should be as famous as the cherry blossom festivals in Japan. The pastel white and pink colours of the cherry and magnolia trees when set against the iconic backdrop of the pastel coloured houses of Notting Hill is a sublime sight.
Notting Hill is London’s Greatest Community at the heart of London, the World’s Greatest City.
Notting Hill is known for its diverse and cosmopolitan community. Famed for its carnival and legendary portobello road. But its urban innovation was actually the communal gardens. These “pleasure grounds” enclosed by housing terraces or crescents create an extraordinary green oasis. Instead of separating London’s squares and gardens with a road. Allason houses had direct access to these amazing communal gardens. These green pasture naturally create a shared community among its urban dwellers. Notting Hill, the world greatest urban environment in the World’s greatest city – London.
Van Gogh’s blossom paintings were part of his search for serenity and the sublime.
Ironically for Van Gogh – the worst his condition the greater his paintings became. “Having as much of this serenity as possible …. is perhaps a better remedy for all diseases than all the things that are sold at the chemist’s shop. ” A sentiment we believe is true of our sublime, fresh, handmade chocolates as well. He was inspired by the blossoms of the almond, apricot, peach and plum trees. Our Van Goth’s Easter Egg also touches the sublime as it is handcrafted among the beautiful blossoms of Notting Hill.
Van Gogh’s blossom paintings were inspired by Japanese block prints.
Holland Park has a beautiful Japanese Garden at its heart. Visit Melt Chocolates Holland park and be inspired. We hold chocolate tastings in our beautiful boutiques – from as little as £10.
